We took the 2019 Nissan Altima up a mountain, and the all-wheel drive system overheated. Did we use the vehicle “beyond normal use” or is Nissan relying too heavily on VDC to keep the system working? Watch and post a comment:

Overheating o n-demand type systems are more and more common with more power, and more weight. They all slip the clutches and the systems are getting smarter (to prevent damage) but not more capable. So it’ s not that older systems aren’t experiencing accelerated wear from excessive heat...its just that they tell you and do something about it now.

That VDC going out is just unacceptable. Normal driving for some people is driving up an icy road several miles. While my various subaru’s have had mechanical issues they have never had AWD failure.

That’s pretty lame. I drove a Rogue in Colorado and it did pretty well but I didn’t try anything like that.

Is this a test you do regularly? I’d be interested how the A4 and Subaru’s you recommend at the end of the video handle the hill.

Because of varying weather conditions in the mountains (and the roads aren’t plowed) we have to vary the tests, but we are going to be doing them all season this year. Below is the one we did for Subaru recently (that road is now blocked by 10-ft of snow) . Tomorrow we’re filming one with the SH-AWD and the 2019 Acura MDX, probably on the same road as Altima, or one similar.

Not that this is awd system is good for sustained slipping and sliding but t hat’s a whole lot of extra waggling the car side to side.
